Here lies my little angel after a very hard and long road. For those who don't know or aren't sure how we got here I'll explain...
Asher had a urinary tract infection a little over a year ago (which took a week to diagnosis--it's a long story). UTI's a rare in boys and very rare in boys Asher's age. Our doctor recommended we go get testing to be on the safe side as there was only a 20% chance something could be wrong. Of course we felt it was stupid, but that we should be obedient so we went to see a Nephrologist. We did a sonogram and found that his kidney was dilated. Upon further testing they decided it was dilated, but not blocked so we were cleared for a year. We went for our 1 year follow-up with no symptoms the whole year thinking we'd be all cleared. Our Nephrologist sent us to the Urologist since we never saw one the year before. The Urologist decided to be cautious and do a follow-up sonogram to see where we were at after the year. It was a test after this one that we found out we were no longer in the good zone, not in the grey zone, but we were in the red zone. Asher's kidney was not draining and not draining with a dieuretic. It was decided that surgery was needed. This really was an answer to our prayers. Of course we wanted nothing to be wrong with our son, but we were tired of all these appointments and tests (horrible tests) with no clear answers. So, although surgery is the last thing a parent wants to go through it was nice to have an answer and "fix him". He had his surgery on December 21st. We'll have an outpatient surgery February 5th. His kidney is shrinking so we're headed in the right direction. It is still a process, but we are getting there. They will follow us until he is back to normal. I never dreamed that day would be as hard as it was--not to mention all the recovering it has taken after (we're still recovering). We truly thank God for all He's done though this. Through a hard situation we count our many blessings. Asher has lost no kidney functioning which is a blessing. Kidney disease is often undiagnosed until there are worse symptoms and functioning has begun to be lost. We are so blessed to have had the UTI a year ago and to have this found.
One of the presents donated for kids in the hospital. He didn't make it much past opening them though. He started feeling ill and was back asleep.
The cousins watching and learning. Reese can tell you anything you would want to know about his surgery. She would just stare at him and say "he's too young to go through this". I said there are kids younger then him here and her response was "yeah, but when it's your family it's just different." Still brings tears to my eyes. Such a sweet sensitive heart.
As he started feeling better we were able to go around the hospital in the wagon. We did get pretty good at maneuvering the IV pole and wagon down the halls and in the elevators. We were a little scary at first and wondered why they let people like us take kids around without a license for the thing. LOL.
